Sudbury and Manitoulin authors team up for workshop on historical fiction

Rosanna Battigelli and Marion Seabrook offer tips at Manitoulin Writers' Retreat in Kagawong -

When you are writing a novel, it may be necessary to take one step forward and two steps back in order to ensure historical accuracy and fully developed characters, according to two of the workshop leaders at this summer's Manitoulin Writers' Retreat in Kagawong. Rosanna Battigelli, past president of the Sudbury Writers' Guild and Marion Seabrook, a founding member of the Manitoulin Writers' Circle have teamed up to guide prospective novelists through the intricate process of crafting historical fiction.

Both Northern Ontario authors have studied voyages taken by their ancestors and have woven aspects of their heritage into their fiction. Ms. Battigelli was born in Italy and emigrated to Canada with her family at three years of age. During the writing of two novels, she has made extensive use of childhood memories, new immigrant experiences, family anecdotes and historical archives.

Her short story entitled "Food for Thought" appeared in the anthology Mamma Mia! Good Italian Girls Talk Back published by ECW Press. Her work has also been featured in Women Writing 3: Journeys, a special edition of Canadian Woman Studies by Inanna Publications and Education Inc.

Marion Seabrook, author of Once Upon an Island and Touched By an Island, has converted her novels into stage dramas for the entertainment of Manitoulin audiences. And recently her short story "How the Old Woman Learned Respect" was adapted into a one-act play for Debahjehmujig Theatre. In collaboration with artist Richard Edwards, she also published a novella called Mary's Journal.

The authors will present a workshop entitled "One Step Forward, Two Steps Back: Writing Historical Fiction" on Sunday, July 12, noon to 2 p.m. at the Billings Library in Kagawong. "As a writer of historical fiction, you delve into the past and create in the present, always with the intent of moving toward the future: the completion of your novel!," the authors state. "This workshop will provide insight into the various phases you will navigate in your time travels. It will explore character and plot development, setting, structure and general techniques to help you make your story authentic and effective." Judy Martin - La Cloche Art Show Distinguished Artist
Saturday, January 24, 2009

The La Cloche Art Show committee is pleased to announce that the Distinguished Artist for 2009 will be Judy Martin.

Judy maintains a working studio in downtown Little Current that looks out on the North Channel and the historic swing bridge. Her wide range of art media includes drawings and paintings on paper and canvas, fabric and paper collage, experimental work with wax and hand stitched large wall quilts.

Judy grew up on a farm in the Fort Frances area of Northwestern Ontario and moved to Manitoulin Island in 1993. Although she already has a fine arts degree from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Judy embarked on a second one by distance from Middlesex University in the UK three years ago. Studying art at the university level informs her practice with art history and theory and gives her work a certain technical discipline.

Last summer the Gore Bay museum mounted 'Red Thread', Judy's twenty-first solo exhibition. She has also participated in over sixty group exhibitions across Canada and the USA and her work is in several public collections including the Canada Council Art Bank.

Judy and her husband Ned live on Manitowaning Bay. Together they have raised four environmentally concerned young adults.

Her work can be seen year round at the Art Gallery of Sudbury's art rental space as well as seasonally at the Perivale Gallery on Manitoulin. As well, Judy keeps an online journal where she publishes a piece of her art and writes about being an artist regularly. A link to this blog is on her web site. www.judithmartin.info

The 32nd annual La Cloche Art Show will be held at the Whitefish Falls Community Centre, Whitefish Falls, Ontario, from July 4 to 12, 2009. The artist's deadline for pre-registration is June 15, 2009. For more information visit our website at www.geocities.com/laclocheartshow, the Facebook site - La Cloche Art Show or email laclocheartshow@hotmail.com .

Membership..Time to renew!
Monday, December 22, 2008

Hello everyone, and welcome to yet more whiteness. Where is Bing Crosby so that we can toss his 78 speed dream of whiteness into the trash ????? :-)

Given that all of you who were going to be at the potluck were going to ante up your memberships, I thought I'd just remind everyone in MFAA that the postal service still makes regular visits to my mailbox, and the membership renewals are on the same timeline as before our meeting.

Thanks to each of you who've already and recently sent in your membership cheques and forms so that the listing of where you live and what you do can be complete when it arrives on your screenstep (as opposed to doorstep) come sometime in January.

Although the website still lists the Little Current address, please send all membership renewals to me by the end of this month (or at minimum put it in an envelope today if you'd rather not continue developing procrastination skills)
98 Cedar Cres
Providence Bay
P0P 1T0

To save you receiving these not-so-gentle reminders, if you are not planning to renew for 2009 would you please send me an email( mycatz@amtelecom.net ) to that effect? Thanks very much.

Do have a gentle and healthy Christmas everyone,
Erin-Blythe

Hello all members: Congratulations on a great year for the MFAA!! There have been many successful ventures and exhibits. Welcome to a number of new members. This year has been characterized by the MFAA adding a new event...the members exhibit held at museum in Sheg in September and October. The show was very well attended and reviewed. We have secured the space again for next year at the same time and once again all members will be invited to exhibit.

Many thank you's are in order for the smooth presentation of events this year...we have a great board of directors who bring a high level of experience and competence to the board. They are Ivan Wheale, Petra Wall(secretary), Jon Butler (website), John Knox( treasurer), Linda Williamson (returning once again..NOAA rep), Andy Smith, Maja Mielonen, Leslie Morin and Andy Smith. Diana St. Pierre was on the board until April. Thank you to all for the amount of personal time given to keep the MFAA running so well. Thank you as well to Linda Jack who has done so much behind the scenes.

The Artastic Fushion event (April) started out our year and was a great success with a number of artists exhibiting alongside the high school students....thank you to Maja Mielonen for putting this event together once again and to Linda Jack, Petra Wall and Ivan Wheale for spending time with the students. This event is open to all members who wish to participate in 2009.

In July we held the annual art tour to great acclaim. We had a number of new artists joining this year. Many noted that the personal time they had to spend with guests was valuable. There was quite a variety of settings that the public could visit this year. Thanks to the committee led by Leslie Morin, and supported by Linda Jack, Andy Smith and Nancy McDermid. Thank you to Leslie's daughter Wendy who did such an excellent job with the broshure and to Diana St. Pierre who assisted and passed on valuable information.

This year the art tour committee along with Ivan and June Wheale visited the Domtar facility to thank them for their many years of support for the tour. Ivan generously donated a wonderful print as part of the presentation...thank you Ivan!!

The NOAA was displayed at the Sheg museum this year. Congratulations to Richard Edwards for being chosen from the MFAA entries. Thank you goes to Linda Williamson for coordinating the entries, all the communication and attending the annual meeting.

We had one educational this year...presented by Sarah Warburton...a workshop about photographing your artwork...thanks Sarah for a great presentation. Those who attended felt they really benefited from the info.

We now have a new membership coordinator Erin-Blythe Reddie and we thank her for all her efforts so far. Recently she sent an e-mail outlining the membership info and is collecting all membership fees for 2009 as well as data so a new mailing list can be made up. Thank you for renewing your memberships. The cost is still $20 for those who volunteer and $30 for those who do not.
Regarding volunteering we are always willing to welcome new ideas and artists to our commitees. Perhaps some members would like to help out with one event only...please contact me if you would like to do so.

At this point I would like to say that I hope I have remembered and included all those who help to make the MFAA such a productive organization. If not please consider yourself appreciated as it takes alot of effort from alot of artists to make things click and still leave us time to do our art!

Once again contrats on a great year and we the Board wish you the very best for the Season as well as a productive and enjoyable artistic winter!!

Sincerely,

Nancy McDermid
President MFAA
