Jon Butler (8)

“Landscape is a medium for ideas.” - Robert Henri

“Whiter than the stones
of Stone Mountain -
autumn wind.” - Basho

The details in a landscape mean nothing if they do not express some mood of nature felt by the artist/photographer.

I strive to capture internal feelings and the external harmony of the natural world - the passing seasons of life.

The La Cloche mountain range of Northeastern Ontario is one of the oldest mountain ranges in the world. Less than two billion years ago and before glacial erosion, these beautiful quartzite and granite mountains were as high as the Rockies. It is a beautiful and spiritual area on the north shore of Georgian Bay with Killarney Park in the east and the town of Spanish in the west.

Generations of people have been intrigued by the quartzite mountains, crystal clear lakes, windswept pines and abundance of wildlife. The continually changing light and shadows have entranced artists, including five members of the Group of 7, and lovers of the outdoors for centuries.

Jon Butler, a retired newspaper executive, who changed his clothes to enjoy the passing seasons of life has been capturing and enjoying the light of La Cloche for more than 25 years. He concentrates on solitary and contemplative landscapes and atmospheric effects.

The colour, details and shadows seen in his photographs are achieved through the use of camera settings and Jon’s unique sense of light. Jon’s exhibition photographs, except for The Benjamin series, are taken at dawn during the few moments before the sun rises. He uses no additional or altered colour and no digital enhancement. He photographs with 35mm Olympus, 2 1/4 Mamiya, 4 X 5 Linhof and 8 X 10 Agfa cameras.

His photographs reflect years of meditation on the subject matter and they draw viewers into the light of La Cloche. All limited edition photographs are original, manipulative free and in a limited series of 10 or less. The negative is then destroyed.

Jon’s ‘Photo Haiku’ is a form of mixed media combining limited edition photographs and an original haiku written on natural surfaces. A haiku is the expression of temporary enlightenment, in which we see into life and in this case it is La Cloche. Each of the haiku series is limited to five or less.

Private and corporate collections in Canada and the United States have purchased his photographs.

‘The stark beauty of Jon Butler’s Cranberry Narrows was judged the Best Photography.’ - The Manitoulin Expositor, September 15, 2004

“In some of his works, Butler marries sensitivity and composition in a wonderfully harmonious union. A stellar piece entitled Cranberry Narrows offers balance, order, symmetry, and beauty.” The Sudbury Star, February 18, 2006

“The close, even intimate, relationship and depth of feeling between the artist and the art is clear in each of the works. On the whole, the diligence and patience Butler invested in capturing the more illusive moments of nature’s splendor will affect viewers.” – The Sudbury Star, February 18, 2006

Jon, his wife Kerry and son Sam live in Willisville located in the heart of the La Cloche Mountains. Daughter Loren works in the heart of Brantford and daughter Vanessa lives in the heart of Sudbury.

Photographs and photo art cards are available upstairs at Turners Gallery of Little Current, The Art Gallery of Sudbury gift shop, Killarney Park Store and Northwest Trading Company, Espanola.

Richard Edwards (2)

Richard Edwards is an accomplished Canadian artist whose work belongs to many private and corporate collections through out North America and Europe. Richard has been a full time artist since graduating with honours from Ontario College of Art.

Working in a number of mediums, oils, acrylic, and serigraphs, the challenging art of watercolour painting is his choice for working from nature. These paintings and original hand pulled serigraphs capture a moment in time, filled with colour and natural light. Richard has spent many years refining his skills as a watercolorist. Using multiple layers of washes he brings out the depths and mood of a subject. Work began in the field is completed in the studio, when opportunity arises work is completed painting plein-air. His exceptional landscapes reflect his dynamic approach to watercolours and the respect he has for nature.

Based on Manitoulin Island he lives and paints mostly in Northern Ontario but has painted from Canada to Mexico. This picturesque area is a painter’s delight. Being surrounded by such rugged beauty he is constantly inspired to share his artistic visions. Richard works from his studio, at Edwards Studios located in the historical Old Mill, Kagawong. He is an Associate of the Ontario College of Art, a member of Visual Arts Ontario, Manitoulin Fine Art Association and the Sudbury Northern Artist Gallery, received his letters in the Northern Ontario Arts Association and is a Friends of Killarney Artist. Richard’s work has been shown in numerous exhibitions and received many Awards.

Lynne Gerard (6)

Author, artist and calligrapher, Lynne Gerard, immigrated from Michigan to Manitoulin in 2005 and has worked at establishing Ravenseyrie Studio in Gore Bay.

Located in the unique "Wharf Building" at the mouth of the bay, Ravenseyrie Studio (on the second level overlooking the lake) is a combination working art studio and gallery.

Combining her evocative poetic prose, flowing calligraphy and energetic watercolor paintings, Lynne's work represents the modern Western version of "San-chüeh" (The Three Perfections) once considered the highest art form during China's Sung Dynasty.

Directly inspired by her study of cave paintings, Lynne has begun gathering rock "canvases' from the North Channel, along the shoreline of the property (also known as Ravenseyrie) where she and her husband live on Gore Bay's East Bluff.

In an attempt to create rock paintings as authentic and moving as those rendered by the Upper Paleolithic artisans, Lynne studied how to make her own pigments from natural materials such as wood charcoal, white quartzite, lake shore clay and red hematite gathered from Ravenseyrie.

After grinding these materials by hand in a stone pestle and mortar (also from the lake shore), Lynne mixes the pigments with either hemp seed oil or lake water to make her paint. Incorporating her own stylized designs, Lynne's rock paintings link the past to the present in an exciting, earthy way.

Lynne is a rather "quiet" member of the Manitoulin Fine Arts Association, but each year she participates in the Manitoulin Art Tour.

To learn more about Lynne's art you may write her at ravenseyrie@xplornet.com or visit her at her Ravenseyrie Studio which is open year round.

Lynne's painted rocks, original watercolors, matted prints, hanging scrolls and exquisite greeting cards are on display and for sale. An exciting new addition to Lynne's body of work is her "Manitoulin Muse Journal", a "not-quite-blank" book she has self-published.

Off season hours are Tuesday-Saturday 12pm-4pm. Spring and summer hours are Monday-Saturday 11am-5pm.

Linda Jack (3)

Upon retiring I moved to the Island from Kapuskasing in 1999. Manitoulin’s appealing landscape as well as my love of animals and nature inspired me to take up watercolour. Prior to that I had enjoyed painting decorative works in acrylic for family and friends.

Sabine Kristensen-Didur (6)

My name is Sabine Kristensen-Didur, I was born in Toronto, Ontario. When I was very young, my family moved out to Regina, Saskatchewan where I loved growing up. Life on the prairies was beautiful and inspiring with the majestic skies, and endless prairies.

Later I developed an interest in Egyptology and Archaeology, and decided to move back to Toronto to pursue my interests. I attended the University of Toronto, where I obtained my honours B.A. in Egyptology.

The language and art history of ancient Egypt has always been inspiring to me, and has always inspired my creativity. Each picture or symbol of ancient Egyptian language tells a story, and I believe that my own pictures do the same.

My hobbies include photography, painting, writing stories, computers, web design, and horseback riding.

Nature has always been an interest of mine. Since I came to Gore Bay, Manitoulin Island in February of 2003, I was inspired almost immediately by the land, lakes and wonderful nature all around. I do get homesick from time to time, but Regina will always be in my heart. I feel the same about Manitoulin as it has became home to me. So far my experiences have been good for the most part, and there has been a lot of adjustments, especially the humidity on the Island. On the prairies its dry and it takes about an hour or more of driving to find a lake. The winters on the Island have been my passion. The solitude and tranquilly has inspired my photography.

I am very excited to show my pictures and I hope that all who see them will be inspired to create or be creative. The artists that inspired my creative are Viggo Mortensen and Christopher Doyle.

Show Experience.

June 2004 to Sept 2004

Some of my work was shown at the 4 Elements Gallery in Little Current, Ontario.

August 2004 to present.

Currently showing my photos at Deviantart.com

Currently showing eight of my photos on Photo.net .

My new web site is http://web.mac.com/islandbeanie An Alluring and Secluded Island

Description of work:

Solitude: "The whole valve of solitude depends upon one’s self. It may be a sanctuary or a prison. A haven of repost or, a place of punishment. A heaven or a hell, as we ourselves make it.” - John Lubbock

Many of my photos reflect the solitude that the island provides to its residents and visitors. The tranquil, quiet and isolating feeling of my photos soothes the soul and awake the mind.

Judy Martin (4)
Judy Martin, HBFA, NOAA

Judy began her professional art career by exhibiting watercolour paintings of her four children. She grew up in the Fort Frances area of Northwestern Ontario, and has lived and worked in Thunder Bay and in Kenora. She went to Lakehead University twice, once at age 19 for a teacher’s diploma and again fifteen years later for a fine arts degree. For the last eleven years her family has enjoyed the serenity of their home below the scenic lookout at Ten-Mile Point on Manitoulin Island.

Judy learned to make quilts as a young woman and eventually chose this traditional medium to express her concerns regarding women artists and daily life. During the 80’s and 90’s her embellished art quilts were widely exhibited and have brought this artist national renown. Judy has produced sixteen solo exhibitions of her quilts and paintings, and has participated in over 60 group exhibitions across Canada and the U.S.A. Her work is in several public collections, including the Canada Council Art Bank

Recently Judy has been making mixed media textile art, combining fabrics, threads, paints, photos and text in order to communicate poetically.

Human existence takes place through a long series of images. Everyone sees differently because everyone has his or her own personal life story that affects comprehension. I think humans continually seek understanding of their life and art helps to show a way.”

Marcus Mohr (6)
Location: Mindemoya, ON

Age: 27

Mediums: Oil, Acrylic, Sculpture, Animation, Writing and Film.

Over the past 2 years I have been working vigorously on many art projects. In late 2007 I picked up my paintbrush again after a 5 year break. I found it was the best thing I ever did. Since then I have produced over 30 paintings in acrylic and oil.

In addition to the paintings I chiselled out two substantial sculptures in 2008. The first was entered into the 31st annual La Cloche Art Show and won first place and was later sold at the Manitoulin Art Tour. Since then I have been painting mostly on commission. In late 2008 I started work on a film project with the working title "The Death of Danny Dodge." I am a member of the Boreal North Sculpture Association and the MFAA.

Leslie Moody (3)

I was born and raised on Manitoulin Island and currently live in Sudbury. I moved from Manitoulin to attend Sheridan College in Oakville, where I received a certificate in Art Fundamentals as well as a Visual Merchandising Diploma.

Although I did enjoy drawing when I was younger, I didn’t start painting regularly until recently. My preferred artistic outlet is acrylic painting, although I have started experimenting with oil. Several of my paintings reflect my love of the outdoors and Manitoulin Island scenery. I also enjoy graphic design, photography and writing, which I hope to develop further.

Recently inspired to become more involved with the Arts Community, I joined the Manitoulin Fine Arts Association as well as the Sudbury Arts Council. I’m looking forward to being more active in the arts community as well as exhibiting my work.

Leslie Morin (5)
Leslie moved to Manitoulin Island in 2001. Two years prior to that, she began painting classes. She says that it was such a thrill putting brush to canvas and actually creating a work of art! Her medium is acrylics and she enjoys the challenge of capturing the beauty of Manitoulin Island scenery. Sailing the North Channel has provided her with many beautiful photographs to try to recreate on canvas. This year her painting “Island of Rocks” in the North channel was chosen for best Acrylic in the Annual Heritage Alive Exhibit held at the Centennial Museum. 45 Limberlost Lane Mindemoya ON, P0P 1S0 705-377-7515 lrmorin(at)vianet.ca

Rochelle Neal (3)

Personal:

Rochelle grew up in Mindemoya and has returned to live there year round. She has a studio on Lake Mindemoya as well as one in her home in Rockville. Visits to her studio to see the artist at work are encouraged. Her paintings can also be seen at Perivale Gallery, Spring Bay. Commissions are accepted.

In 1996 Rochelle began to paint in watercolour. Since July 1997 she has shown her work in this area as well as London, Ontario and in Florida. She was the featured Watercolour Artist at "St Thomas Appreciation of the Arts" in 1999. St Thomas Art Gallery invited her for a two month showing in 2001. Her work has been juried into NOAA Exhibition three times. She has been the recipient of numerous Awards.

Artist Statement:

I use vibrant watercolour and clarity of line to capture my subject in realistic detail. My focus continues to be the wildlife, flora and unusual fauna of Manitoulin as well as rustic things from our past. Complex patterns intrigue me. Nature’s world is fleeting and the modern world so complicated that people do not take time to look at these special things. It is the microelement perspective of texture, patterns of shape and form and the contrast of depth and colour that I strive to achieve. I want my viewers to share visually and emotionally what I saw and felt when a precious "moment in time’ touched me.

Diana Taylor (3)

I have been drawing and painting for years but never discovered what I could do with it until winter 2001.

I am enjoying learning different mediums such as watercolour, graphiteand coloured pencil as well as ink.

Every piece that I have done has a piece of me in it, exposing a part of the inside of me outward for the outside world to see.

This is a new experience and I am enjoying discovering myself in this way.

Petra Wall (4)

Petra Wall has been painting with watercolours for 26 years. Pen and ink drawings as well as pencil sketches have also been favourites. In 1995 rock carving and photography were initiated but Wall has always enjoyed the spontaneity and the subtle nature of watercolours the most.

Formal training was gained through courses at both the University of Edmonton and Windsor as well as Sir Sandford Flemming College in Haliburton. The last course was through Cambrian College in 2004. Wall participated in several shows last year. Various works were shown at the: * Annual Membership Display in Manitowaning, * The Yacht Race Weekend in Little Current * ART 100 in Little Current * Annual Manitoulin Art Tour at the Gore Bay site.

Wall has historically been drawn to the human form. This year experimentation with interpretive forms and designs are on the agenda. Some work is also planned with alternate media: rock carving and photography.

Ina (Koehler) Wesno (4)
I grew up painting landscapes and wildlife around me in a small rural community called Rydal Bank in Northern Ontario. I started in earnest with oils when I was twelve before switching to acrylics as I got involved with the teaching of art.

I developed an intense interest in Northern themes during my six years of teaching in the Arctic, with work being displayed at the Iqaluit Gallery of Fine Arts. The Far North's powerful landscapes still provide challenging subject material and I find myself often drifting back to explore its captivating themes of polar bears and dog teams. While teaching highschool art in Hall Beach, I dabbled with muskox horn carving but prefer to stick to painting.

Since moving back to Ontario here on Manitoulin Island, I have begun experimenting with portraits and rural themes - in between teaching and parenting full-time. My daughter has provided new challenging subject matter to explore recently and my latest work is of her, entitled "Small Wonders". Now, I'm hoping to continue teaching highschool art and focus on both Arctic and local Northern Ontario themes in my work. I also wish to expand on my exploration of wildlife themes in the upcoming years.

Of late in my work, I try to focus on manipulation and application of vivid colour to bring out the intensity or essence of a scene rather than focusing on too much detail. I paint to capture a moment in time of some fleeting aspect of life and consider my work a success when my work can also capture a viewer's attention long enough to appreciate that moment.

Linda Williamson (3)

Linda’s desire for a career in art began in early childhood. She enjoys painting portrait and landscape images. Linda’s 13-year professional art career has expanded to include images of Northern Ontario and her ancestral homeland - Scotland. Linda paints full time at her art studio beside her home on Manitoulin Island.

It is said that Manitoulin Island is where the spirits play. Art can express how a society relates to nature, its delicacy and power. Art can communicate emotion and ultimately uplift spiritually. Through the use of oil and canvas, Linda hopes to convey the peace and tranquility that the landscape can bring to the viewer. Linda believes that art has a purpose, through style and discipline art can speak.

Honours and Awards

Linda’s talent has been recognized by the selection of five of her works of art in the Northern Ontario Art Associations juried exhibitions.

Linda has also had works of art select in several La Cloche Art Shows. At the 2001 La Cloche Art Show, Linda received awards for two landscape images.

On July 02, 2004, Linda shared the Manitoulin Art Tour People's Choice Award for "First Light" Oil on Canvas 2004.

Linda had her first solo exhibition at the Gore Bay Museum August - November 2005.

Marilyn Wright (3)

I was born and raised in Northern Ontario. After raising five children, I discovered watercolour painting as an outlet for my creativity. Since then I have taken the development of my technique very seriously and paint daily.

My watercolour paintings are inspired by the natural beauty of the North Channel of Lake Huron and the La Cloche Mountains near Whitefish Falls, Ontario where I live year-round.

My paintings are full of mood, colour and atmosphere and my works have been exhibited at the juried La Cloche Art Show, the juried Open Door Art Show in Sudbury, the Sheguiandah Museum, the Bay of Islands Group of Five Art Show and the Perivale Gallery on Manitoulin Island.

I hope that people will enjoy my paintings as much as I have enjoyed creating them. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Surrounded by Mother Nature’s varied and ever-changing inspiration, she creates unique pieces of stained glass with diverse themes. Combining the beauty of natural elements with stained glass, Zoe’s flair for design and execution is evident in her three dimensional pieces.
